dr. Matthijs Botman

Zijn interesse in de handchirurgie ontstond al vroeg in zijn carrière toen hij als tropenarts in Afrika werkte. Hier zag hij veel patiënten met complexe wonden, zenuw- en peesletsels, brandwonden, littekencontracturen en ernstige botbreuken.

Ervaring

Na zijn opleiding tot specialist in Nederland is hij zich internationaal blijven inzetten voor het verbeteren van chirurgische zorg in gebieden met weinig artsen en beperkte middelen.
Matthijs Botman werk ook als reconstructief chirurg in de Academische Universitair Medische Centra in Amsterdam en hij is oprichter van Global Surgery Amsterdam. Zijn ervaringen in lage inkomenslanden leidde tot een proefschrift, Beyond Short-term Medical Missions, waarin hij pleitte voor de ontwikkeling van beter chirurgische trainingsmateriaal dat gemakkelijk online toegankelijk is. Hij is van mening dat internationale samenwerking gericht op kennisoverdracht de sleutel vormt tot het dichten van de chirurgische kloof.
